Tools and Sites I Use or Have Used for Twitter
If you have any addition suggestions feel free to let me know. I’ll be happy to check it out and discuss it.
I’ll keep adding as I discover more, but as of right now the twitter tools I’m using are as follows:
http://www.socialoomph.com (Used to be known as tweetlater) I use for automation of tweets. There’s a free and a paid service. You can set up for auto DM (direct message) of those that follow you, thanking them for their following. You can go in and set up the next days auto tweets. There’s roughly an 80/20 rule that many of us have been using as a guide line. 80% content, 20% advertise. Quotes are a good way to fill in and add tweets if you can’t think of anything else. Just remember to keep it all positive. Twitter has gotten good at recognizing duplicates, so you will have to wait a day to repeat the same tweet or change at least 20% of the text.
http://www.evertweet.com is a new service out there, that very well in the future could rival and possibly surpass socialoomph. The best useful tool inside is the ability to track your non-DM conversations with your followers on Twitter. It’s Auto-Dm is currently not working, so don’t use that. They have a way to schedule tweets to be sent out repeatedly, a service that socialoomph ceased supporting, it does not however have the save as draft feature like socialoomph. There is also a paid service here that allows for a little more functionality as well as affiliate commissions.
http://www.buzzom.com is a another new tool on the market that allows you to search people’s profiles for keywords and follow a large group of people at a time view that search. For the paid service it will also search the content of their tweets. buzzom also has the mass unfollow capability of those that are not following you, however you’ll still have to manually click on each individual you wish to unfollow.
http://tweepi.com is an online service that has a lot of different tools for managing your twitter followers. One tool I found useful was it will look at the tweets of your followers and let you look at the number of RT’s they are sending out and the percentage of their tweets that are links. This feature allowed me to identify bots and people that are only advertising and unfollow them to free up my feed.
http://thetwittertagproject.com/followfriday.php Is an online resource that can help you create follow friday lists #FF it reviews your account for those that have either re-tweeted or mentioned you and gives you suggestions for #FF threads. If you’re not familiar with #FF Every friday is what’s called Friend Follow Friday on twitter where you send out a list of fellow twitters that you’d like to recommend to your followers. Maybe they’ve helped you with a question, re-tweeted your comment or for any reason. It’s another way to get some good exposure, because many times the people you mention will re-tweet the #FF to their followers as well helping you to create your list. It’s also good to remember that the supposed busiest time on twitter is 4:30 pm EST, apparently this is when most people are viewing. This is when I set up my #FF automation slowly building my list through out the week and saving the previous weeks list. Social Oomph will also send you daily reports of mentions and re-tweets. From these reports is how I build my list.
http://www.quotatio.com is a great quote resource.
http://twitsnear.me/ is a resource I’ll view on occasion to see if I can enter the conversation. It pulls off your ISP address I believe to show you all tweets in your area. These might or might not be people you’re following but geographically are close by. Might be a good way to plant the seeds for future meet-ups and or leads.
http://j.mp/ Here’s the site I used to use to shorten all my URL’s to fit into my twitter feeds usually saves a character or two more. There’s a link inside as well that you can drag to your tool bar and can click on while surfing any site, the shortened URL will pop-up in a new window with a suggested tweet line then just copy paste and tweet. This service is operated by http://bit.ly.com
http://twunfollow.com/ This site offers a tool to connect to twitter to send you out an email notifying you of those people that are no longer following you, so you can go in and un-follow them yourself or possibly contact them on to the reason why. Or maybe just to keep an eye on wether or not you’re loosing followers.
http://www.bubbletweet.com/ Here’s a cool little thing that I’ve just started using with twitter. You can go here and create a little 30 second video or even upload one that pops up into a new window with your twitter profile page behind it, I use it with Social Oomph.com in my auto follow message, you can say a lot more in 30 seconds than what you can type in 140 characters, not to mention it’s a great way for people to get a feel for you through video. For an idea here’s the one I used to use for my thank you message http://bbltwt.com/oxhso There’s no sign up as of yet, just a way to use the service. You can also use this for whatever you tweet as it allows you to tweet any of the videos right away.
Through Twitter http://twitter.com/widgets/facebook you can have your Twitter status update to your Facebook Status. This is how I save the time of updating both. I’ll get comments from both and if you feel there’s something you tweeted that you don’t want on facebook you can always go back to facebook and selectively delete the tweet.
http://twitturly.com is a site where you can track what links are getting shared the most via twitter. Great to keep an eye on what’s popular.
Something else to keep in mind. If you expect or anticipate your tweet to be re-tweeted (RT) remember to use only about 120 of the 140 to leave room for the recognition under the old user initiated RT, some programs haven’t updated yet for twitters version of re-tweeting. Also if you use twitter to RT it only goes out to those that are following you. If you use the older method there’s still a chance for it to be picked up by anyone and passed along, something else to think about as well when you RT or hope to be RT’d yourself.
Interested to hear if anyone has any other useful tools to pass on as well. Always looking to maximize. I’ll update as I find more.
Note: as of July 2010 I have no affiliation and receive no compensation from any of the mentioned links. If that changes in the future I’ll be sure to annotate that in the vicinity of that link.

Hello John!
Nice resource collection you have put together! I will be working through them slowly.
I was bummed out with Buzzom.com being down for the count since yesterday – Follow Friday – and it’s still down today!!!
So looking around for another tool I just tried out http://www.huitter.com and it’s acting like a broken link!!!
Now I am wondering if I am having DNS issues…
Thanks for your efforts!
See you at CFM!

Thanks for the comment Patrick,
I thought I mentioned that huitter was no longer working. They were actually forced to shut down by Twitter.
As soon as I find another option I’ll post it. I’d keep an eye on Tweepi as well. I just posted a video on them yesterday in the video section.
