Filed under: Article MarketingGeneral Thoughts and ObservationsMarketing Tips

I have been coaching quite a few people lately on their Internet Marketing Business and the same thing seems to be a common trend among many of them.  Are you suffering from the same problem?

What I have noticed is many of you “trying” something out, you might do it one or two times, heck maybe even ten times. You did not see the results that everyone else is talking about and abandoned it.

When it comes to learning and mastering a form of marketing, there’s a lot you are going to need to learn.

Do not make the assumption that you already know something, realize there is always something more that you can learn.  If a particular form of marketing is not working out for you then there is probably a good reason why.

You have not done it enough and you are still missing a key element.

Take article marketing for example. Many will tell you that article marketing is very effective for driving traffic and gaining attention. What many fail to pass along are the reasons article marketing is effective:

a) You have fully learned the effective skills to write in an interesting and persuasive manner.

b) You have submitted more than 100 articles to a directory site. Why is it not effective until you’ve submitted so many articles?      The key is that with article directory sites, third-party websites pick up and publish your articles from there. This is actually where all the traffic comes from, not the actual directory site.

Many of these publishers will not see you as an expert in your area until you have over 100 articles submitted. If you submit only a few articles, the publishers will probably gather that you’re “trying” things out and skip your article for another article from an author with a little more experience.

You should realize that if you did not get the results you desired,  either you are doing something wrong or have not built enough momentum yet.  Remember that Rome was not built overnight, don’t expect your business to be any different. The reason that others have succeeded is that they have failed more than you.

Do you think Michael Jordan became a basketball sensation overnight? I can tell you for a fact that was not the case, he actually failed to make the team the first time he tried out.

Take a step back, find one or two things you want to do for marketing, no more than three. Focus on those until you see results. Once they are producing you can then add another form of marketing to your mix and divert your attention a little. Notice I say only a little, because in the Internet Marketing game, the rules of the game can change at a moments notice, and there will always be more to learn.

There is another problem that many people are succumbing to.

Are you one of those that are on a bunch of different email lists, spending a lot of wasted time reading about all the new different directions that everyone else is heading in their marketing?

Have you fallen into the trap above, discouraged with your results and immediately jump ship hoping to ride the new wave on another new form of marketing?

It has to deal with focus. Again, we are talking about not doing one form of marketing enough, not because you are telling yourself it did not work, but because you are hearing, hoping and believing that something else is better. You have either lost faith in yourself or your marketing. We are back at, if it was not effective, you did not do it long enough, and learn what you needed to be successful.

F.O.C.U.S. – Follow one course until successful – Robert Kiyosaki

What happens when a “new” form of marketing comes out is that so many people do the same thing, they all jump ship on what they are working on, abandon the momentum that they have built, and go onto the next “new big thing”. By everyone shifting to the next “new thing” it also ends up saturating the market and diminishing the effect of everyone’s desired result. Again the person that was being effective in that form of marketing, took the time to test it, and keep working on it until they understood the entire process. They weren’t successful overnight either.

The side effect of jumping ship and heading after the next “new big thing” is that it usually becomes very costly too. There are either some upstart fees or fees for courses explaining this new type of marketing to you, for you to get started. What happens? You end up spending more money than you have made, trying to push forward, while actually hovering in neutral, or falling further behind.

You find out that it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be and head back to what you were doing before, but have lost the momentum you had built up. What you lost here was both time and money.

Stop trying out different forms of marketing and just do it.

Many laughed at Yoda when he said “Do or do not, there is no try.”

Many laughed when Mr. Miyagi said “Either you karate do “yes” or karate do “no.” You karate do “guess so,” (squish) just like grape. Understand?”

So ask yourself, are you trying or are you doing?

What happens to the individual after too much of the above? Their mindset gets blown out of the water. They’re not seeing the results, they loose the motivation they had early on, and they become less confident in their business and themselves.

Successful Business is a mindset game through and through. Either you have the right mindset in the beginning and you build a solid business knowing on faith alone that you’re on the right path and success is definite. You accidentally have some sales come along that encourage and build up your mindset and you begin to believe that success is definite. Or, you hope that one day it’s going to all work out.

I can tell you with the third, two things happen, you either will end up on the successful path from the 2nd avenue, or you will just continue to look for the “It doesn’t work” bandwagon and hitch a ride.

To be a successful internet marketer you’re going to need the right mindset, about your business and about yourself. You are also going to need to learn certain skills and stay focused while you learn them, too many distractions only waste your time and limit your results in the short run.

Stay focused, learn what you know you need to learn, do not expect anyone to hold your hand. You know what you need to learn, stop putting it off. Keep your head in the game and do not loose the faith in your business or yourself.

These are very important if you are really going to have a successful business, any business!

Below is the recording of  Social Keys on the Road to Success from August 7th, 2010

This week I shared a new article directory, a tip on leveraging the current situation to get more views and buzz on your content posted on Better Networker and my results from a tactic I mentioned last week for increasing blog traffic.

Matt asked a great question this week in reference to Guy Kawasaki’s tweet this week about his book “The Macintosh Way” and replied on how you could utilize a similar tactic to increase your social media followers.

Idea Marketers was the article directory I mentioned and if you haven’t checked out Better Networker yet, I think it’s a great resource for what’s going on now in the world of internet marketing as well as a great vault of information and training.

Let me know below what you like or don’t like about the show. As always trying to improve the content to better serve you.

Also I’m curious if you prefer the recordings, or live, and if you prefer the live, is the current time slot ok or do you have a suggestion for a better time.

I came across this quote today while reading “The Brand Within” by Daymond John and wanted to share it with you all. It’s also too long to share on Twitter. It brings up a very valid point I think. Perhaps not true 100% of the time, but the journey is as if not more important than the goal.

Look for a Review of the book in a few days.

“I know some people say, ‘Keep your eyes on the prize,’ but I disagree. When your eyes are stuck on the prize, you’re going to keep stumbling and crashing into things. If you really want to get ahead, you’ve got to keep your eyes focused on the path.”

- Russell Simmons

The 4 Stages of Your Home Business Success

There’s many of you out there looking at getting involved in a home based business or already apart of one. For the majority of you, that’s probably in a network marketing or direct sales industry, and why not Both Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki have both said that these are actually great viable ways to help you on the road to success by being able to learn the crucial skills you’re going to need.

Today I’m going to give you a little insight into the overall four stages you’re going to experience on your journey.

Stage 1 – Newbie

This is where you first venture in and have already chosen your vehicle that’s going to get you started on your path. You’re full of excitement, because everything is so fresh and new. You’re out there trying to learn what you can and attempting to make your investment back as soon as possible looking for confirmation that you’ve made a sound decision. You can’t wait to mention it to everyone and why not, you’re your own boss now. Those people at work had better watch out, because you’re days at the 9to5 are numbered, but you’re also willing to bring those along that have done you right along the way.

You know success for your home business is right around the corner and you can’t wait.

Stage 2 – Questioning (AKA The Dip – thank you Seth Godin)

By this point you’ve perhaps been in your business a while now, 6 months or more, and you haven’t seen the return on your investment yet. You contemplate sometimes whether or not you should give up. You occasionally dodge criticism or jokes on your behalf asking how the business is working out for you. You’re kind of discouraged to talk to some people, because why would you want to bring someone into something like this, especially close friends and family to feel the frustration you do. You wonder how anyone can find success in a home business.

Many of you will quit by this point. You’ll blame it on the product, the company, perhaps say it was a scam, basically any excuse to give yourself to make you feel better about your decision.

Those few that persevere and continue to move forward will hunker down again, start looking for answers that they might have missed and start looking for all kinds of solutions to their various struggles within business. Many times they will start buying a myriad of different courses and start spending a lot more money than they’re taking into the business. They have convinced themselves, however, that they’re not going to give up.

Stage 3 – Experience and Skill

By this point you begin to realize you’ve gained some of the knowledge and skills you’re going to need to be successful. You’re feeling a little more confident, but still fear something is missing. You know success is right around the corner in your home business, but you’re not quite there yet and you’re aware of it.

You start to see some results, but not totally what you originally had in mind when you started, but you’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and realizing that it is a viable enterprise. You also realize that it can’t be much more than what you already know. Heck you’ve already surpassed all those that gave up before you.

Many of you will realize at this point that it’s more about the internal you, the mindset game that perhaps is holding you back. You start learning more and more about mindset, start seeking out those experts to help you get your head in the game and in the right place. For many mindset is the final key. It can be that brick wall, once you learn to knock it down then you’ll be on easy street. You’re also spending more time on reading and improving yourself over a lot of the courses and so called secret solutions out there.

Stage 4 – Success

At the final stage looking back you realize you made it a lot harder than it should have been, but then hindsight is always 20/20. You’re feeling elated, why, because you’ve got it all figured out. Your minds in the right place, your skills are mastered and you’re feeling invigorated to try out new techniques and new ventures. Perhaps take on a second network marketing company. At this point you’ve realized that you’re the most important part of the equation and to do it in a 2nd company will just affirm that all for you. You’ve got the mindset needed and the confidence to carry you through.

You begin to look back at the 97% that didn’t make it this far. You kind of wish at times you could go back and help those that didn’t make it, now that you know the answers, it’s much easier to share and coach them onto others. You’re looking forward to a leadership role to help many more get to where you are. You also realize that mindset is one of the major keys.

At this point you’re getting the freedom you desired initially and if you haven’t already you start contemplating when to quit your job, not wishing you could. You’ve created a passive income stream, gotten yourself out of bad debt and see how bright the future really is for someone with your potential.

Once you’ve reached the fourth and final stage you know that you can do it again and again, regardless of the system or product. You can find additional opportunities to duplicate what you’ve created and continue to build your business, and with the right financial education you’ll be able to pass on one heck of a legacy to your children.

Leave a comment below and share what stage you’re at and how you’re doing on your journey.

What can Apple Really Teach You to Improve Your Marketing Business? I’m not going to get into the debate of PC vs. Mac; which is better or easier. I really want to point out aspects of the company and its focus that you can take back to compare with your own marketing business whether it be internet marketing or network marketing.

Apple’s overall goal with their products is a total user experience and it’s one of the reasons why they have so many loyal fans and repeat customers.

Walking In

The presentation inside an Apple store to welcome the new and repeat customer is nothing more than impressive. I myself have never seen a dirty store and generally greeted promptly after walking in the door if not met at the door. A lot of this is to impress and welcome the new user. Another aspect is that Apple allows customers to actually make appointments online for a shopping experience. This guarantees someone to be there to assist you in all your questions when choosing your new item, no waiting for someone available, no hunting and pecking isles for a clerk.

Your New Acquisition

Let’s say for example you decide to purchase a new computer from Apple. One of the first things they offer is called “One to One” this has some particular different aspects to it, but let’s talk about the key feature and where it gets its name. Apple for a simple fee of $99 will provide for you one class a week for one on one training with one of their certified trainers for 52 weeks.

Now some of you might complain and say this is an up-sale, but when you boil it down. 52 classes of one on one training with a personal trainer teaching you all aspects about your new machine and will cover at your pace any software that Apple produces for essentially less than $2.00 per class. That’s an amazing deal. It surely isn’t for the money, it costs them more for the trainer.

Why do you think Apple offers such a deal. It’s more as to help ensure that their customers have the best experience with their product and discover how to get the most out of their purchase. It helps to alleviate frustration of owning a new computer or migrating to something a little different.

Another thing to point out, Apple has also taken the time via podcasts to produce 97 short videos to quickly and effectively introduce to you and teach you different aspects of the operating system.

The Long Haul

If you’re outside your one to one classes, or even decline them Apple has set up a few items along the way really to go out of their way to perpetuate that user experience. One of the ways that they have done this is through their Genius Bar. There’s two main points to the Genius bar. One is if you have any technical difficulty with your item they can diagnose the problem on the spot and take the next steps into correcting the problem. Even going as far as making in house repairs for the quickest turn around possible on your item. Sometimes this is simply turning around, and grabbing and immediate replacement product at no charge.

The second primary purpose of the Genius bar is to simple answer your questions on how to use your system. If you have a quick question something that has been eluding you on how to do something, you can make your appointment, go in and get your question answered. Apple doesn’t charge anything additional for this service, it’s just a continuation of that overall user experience from start to finish.

When It’s Time for Something New

One aspect of the Apple experience that many don’t know about is Apple’s recycling program. Not only will Apple gladly take in your old product and dispose of it properly, but they will actually give you trade in credit towards a replacement. If something is outside of warranty or even if you just want to upgrade to the newest release, you actually have a trade in value on your previous purchase towards your new one. They even accept PC’s on this exchange, just a side note if you’ve been debating on switching over.

How Does This Relate to My Business?

I know I’ve given you a lot of information that you might think is irrelevant to your Marketing Business whether it be Network Marketing or Internet Marketing. But let’s review Apple’s overall intent. “User Experience”

When your potential customers come to you, what greets them, does everything look neat and tidy or a hap hazard mess? This could be your person, the facilities you’ve provided or even as simple as your website.

Is there a system in place for them to get the most out of your product making sure they stay pleased with their purchase instead of a major regret? This feeling of regret is often what brings about all the scam claims. Well that and poor marketing tactics by competitor companies. Make sure you’re customers know where to go to get more information or help with their purchase. A business opportunity might need a coaching element, nutritional products might need notes and information to case studies etc…

Do you stay in contact with your customers continuing to build that relationship until they’re ready for something new or an upgrade? Keeping the customers connected, being curious about what they’re doing and keeping curious about what you’re up to can go a long way in building a sound relationship.

Are you in it just for the quick sale or a successful long term business? One thing to realize that with a quick sale often comes a quick business. One of those businesses that are here today gone tomorrow. If you’re truly trying to build a successful business, then you need to be in that marathon and make sure your foundation is solid from start to finish, because with that solid foundation will come with it customers that follow you from upgrade to upgrade and be in it with you for the long haul as well. Taking a second look at your entire system and tweaking it even just a little can go a long way into improving your marketing business.

Say what you will about Apple, but it’s this focus on the total user experience that has maintained them so many loyal customers. Not many companies can create a two hour commercial, call it a keynote, and have customers lining up to watch it. That in and of itself is impressive, but it’s the foundation and focus that has made it possible. To Apple it’s more about the customer than making a buck. It’s another reason why in the midst of one of the worst recession in decades they’re still doing so well.

Leave a comment below and tell me what you’ve been able to learn from Apple to improve your marketing business
